General Information and Constitution

Mission: To create artistic expressions that promote justice

Campus Contribution: Artistic expression of opinion, anonymous or not, to promote physical, emotional, and mental health of students
Interfaith and faith-specific gatherings to support the organization’s notion of justice.

Goals: Reduce stigma around cultural norms that oppress
Promote artistic expression of student social, political, and economic opinions.

Article I
Artistic Justice promotes artistic expression of social, political, and economic opinions. Although the execution of activities is dependent on student availability, the scope of activities is wide. The following are potential artistic activities to be coordinated by the club.

Article II
Members of the College faculty, staff, and administration are eligible for adjunct membership that entitles them to participate in the organization, but may not hold office or vote on organization business.

Membership and participation in Artistic Justice is free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity and expression, pregnancy, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, age, marital status, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by state or federal law.

A core member of the club will attend meetings at personal convenience. Core members are welcome to join any committee as they so choose.

A committee board member will attend every meeting. Committee board members will be selected following an interview with at least one (1) executive board member, serving a term of a semester. Committees are created based on the availability of student artists.

Quorum will consist of 14 members, and is needed for this organization to conduct any official business.

Article III
The executive board will consist of a president, treasurer, vice president, secretary, events coordinator, communication coordinator, and webmaster. For the spring semester of 2018, election will occur by interview with the president. Executive board members will be decided and announced on the 22nd of February. Executive board members will remain in office until the end of the 2018 fall semester.

By the requirements listed by Occidental College, all officers of the executive board will fulfill the following three (3) criteria:
  1. Maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA
  2. Be in a good judicial standing with the College
  3. Be a fully enrolled student of the College

Executive board members are subject to immediate removal if they discriminate against students, faculty, staff, or administration based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity and expression, pregnancy, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, age, marital status, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by state or federal law.

The duties and responsibilities of each executive board office follows. Executive board members are subject for immediate discipline if they ever avoid accountability measures.

President
  • Oversee activities of executive board
  • Coordinate activities through the executive board
  • Establish objectives and goals
  • Ensure continuity of leadership by election

Treasurer
  • Oversee finances, collect dues, and receive proceeds from planned events
  • Prepare and maintain program budgets and financial controls
  • Maintain and supervise the budget on Google Spreadsheets
  • Submit financial statements to the executive board on a quarterly basis

Vice President
  • Preside at meetings in the absence of the president
  • Plan and coordinate committees
  • Identify and recruit prospective members
  • Mentor new officers

Secretary
  • Record the agenda and dialogue of meetings
  • Draft emails and newsletters
  • Maintain a roster of executive board members with contact information
  • Maintain copies of organizational documents, including bylaws

Event Coordinator
  • Create and execute events for the student body, faculty, staff, and administration
  • Ensure fiscal viability of events
  • Record data regarding the approximate attendance of events
  • Promote events by creating a poster to be sent to the digest and posted on Facebook

Vacancies in the event of a mid-term departure of an executive board member will be filled under the following procedures.
  • A vacancy in the office of the President will be filled by the Vice President
  • All other offices will be filled by a nominee of the President elected by a simple majority of members

Article IV
Beginning the spring semester of 2019, members will be eligible to vote for the executive board. Executive board members will be elected during the spring semester of each year by a simple majority of the membership. Executive board members will serve a term of a year.

Article V
Artistic Justice will keep accounts, deposit the organization’s funds, and make expenditures in a manner approved by the Associated Students of Occidental College Finance Office.

Article VI
If an member is interested in amending the constitution, the listed procedure will be followed:
  • Send an email to the executive board listing reasons for a desired amendment as well as personal availability
  • At least one (1) executive board member will send a Google Calendar invitation to the member who desires an amendment
  • Amendments will not be considered if the member does not agree to meet with at least one (1) executive board member
  • Executive board members will deliberate regarding the merits of the desired amendment
  • Should the executive board collectively agree that the amendment has sufficient merit, an updated constitution with bylaws will be promptly submitted to the Office of Student Life

This constitution will be voted upon, approved and adopted by members. All amendments to this constitution and bylaws are subject to the approval of the Office of Student Life.
